Microsoft has finally released the Windows 10 Mobile update for Lumia smartphones, and we show you how to go through the process so that your phone starts using this latest version of the operating system. You do not need cables or a wired connection to your computer, as the files for the update download directly from the Internet with the wireless connection of your Lumia phone.
Although this update was originally announced for last December, it took a while. It is now available for Nokia Lumia 1520, Lumia 930, Lumia 640, Lumia 640XL, Lumia 532, Lumia 535, Lumia 540, Lumia 730, Lumia 735, Lumia 830, Lumia 635 Q GB, Lumia 636 1 GB, Lumia 638 1GB, Lumia 430, Lumia 435, BLU Win HD 2T10u, BLU Win HD LTE x150q, and MCJ MADOSMA Q501 devices. The negative news is that the Lumia 520, 1020 and 1320 will not receive this update.
Tips before updating
An operating system update will not affect your settings or applications, and all your text messages and photos will be preserved. However, it is always advisable to cover your back and make a full backup to avoid unpleasant surprises if something unforeseen happens.
- Back up your applications and settings in Settings> Updates & security> Backup.
- Save your photos and videos from Settings> Devices> Default camera> OneDrive upload settings.
- Backup your text messages from Settings> System> Messages> Backup messages.
In addition, it is always recommended that you perform the updates with enough available battery (at least 50%) and with the device connected to a power source.
You will have to have an Internet connection, and make sure it is through WiFi to avoid exorbitant costs in your mobile data plan.
Another detail that you should take into account is that you will need a lot of free space to be able to install Windows 10: check that you have approximately 1.5 GB available in Settings> System> Storage.
Update your Lumia smartphone to Windows 10
The first thing you should do is check that the updates are already available. You can configure your phone to appear notifications every time there is something to update, in addition to checking manually from Settings> Updates and security> Phone updates> Check for updates. You can install it immediately or postpone the update for a more suitable time. And you can also configure your smartphone to install software and application updates automatically in the future (in the Updates section, look for Advanced options).
When you have started the process, the update could take from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the terminal and the number of applications you have installed. It is likely that the terminal will turn on and off only several times "" is part of the process "" but, of course, you will not be able to use the phone in all that time.
Once your Lumia phone has the new version of the operating system installed, you will need to verify that all applications are up to date as well. Go to Store> Menu> Downloads and updates> Check for updates. Then select Update all.
Remember that you can also activate automatic application updates from Store> Menu> Settings> Application updates and activating the option Update applications automatically when connected to a WiFi network.
