Republic of Gamers (ROG) is an ASUS spin-off brand dedicated to creating gaming hardware and software. Their products are well known among PC gamers, having been on the market since 2006. However, only a few years ago they decided that a mobile specially designed for gamers could be successful in the market. Then the ASUS ROG Phone was born, a mobile with a gaming design that sought to offer raw power capable of moving any game with ease. It must have worked quite well, because in 2020 the well-known manufacturer brings us the ASUS ROG Phone 3, the latest generation of its mobile designed for games.
The datasheet of the new ASUS ROG Phone 3 series is totally overwhelming. It has the most powerful Qualcomm processor, a new cooling system, more RAM than many computers, a screen that outperforms the vast majority of gaming monitors and a gigantic battery capable of withstanding the longest gaming sessions. All this in a very striking design and full of RGB, how could it be otherwise. It will hit the market in the next few days with a price that competes with high-end models. Let's get to know better what the new ASUS ROG Phone 3 offers us.

A technical set that could well pass for that of a gaming PC
ASUS today presented the new ROG Phone 3 series. And we say series because there are three models that are going to hit the market: the ROG Phone 3 in two memory versions and the ROG Phone 3 Strix Edition, a slightly shorter model.
The ASUS ROG Phone 3 is the most powerful model of the three, and possibly one of the most powerful that we can find on the market. It is equipped with the latest Qualcomm processor, the Snapdragon 865 Plus 5G. It is a with eight cores operating at a maximum of 3.1 GHz, manufactured in 7 nm and that has an Adreno 650 GPU.
This processor is very well accompanied. The ROG Phone 3 can be purchased with 12 or 16 GB of RAM, figures that seem more like a computer than a mobile. In addition, it has 512 GB of UFS 3.1 storage for faster read and write speeds.
On the other hand we have the ASUS ROG Phone 3 Strix Edition, which equips a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor. It is a somewhat less powerful chip, with eight cores operating at a maximum of 2.84 GHz and also manufactured with a 7 nm process. This model has 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage.
So that we can squeeze all this power during long gaming sessions, the new ASUS ROG Phone 3 packs two key features. On one side is the GameCool 3 cooling system enhanced by a redesigned 3D vapor chamber, a large graphite film behind the screen to maximize heat transfer, and an enlarged heatsink designed to eliminate hot spots.
On the other hand, ASUS has designed an accessory called AeroActive Cooler 3, an external fan that provides additional cooling during gaming marathons.
But all this would be of no use if we have to have the mobile connected to the electrical current constantly due to lack of battery. So that this is not the case, the ASUS ROG Phone 3 equips a large 6,000 mAh battery, which also has a 30W fast charging system .
A gaming monitor in your pocket and triple camera system
If under the hood we find a fairly impressive technical set, no less striking is the screen that ASUS has decided to include in its new device.
The ASUS ROG Phone 3 is equipped with a 6.59-inch 10-bit AMOLED panel that offers a frequency of 144 Hz and a response time of 1 ms. This is combined with a touch latency frequency of 270 Hz that reduces the sensitive response to 25 ms.
In addition, according to the manufacturer, each screen is carefully calibrated by color to guarantee a Delta-E color accuracy below one, making it one of the most color-accurate displays available on a mobile phone. It also has support for HDR10 + images thanks to its maximum brightness of 1,000 nits, in addition to having passed the TÜV Rheinland Low Blue Light certifications that guarantee less visual fatigue.
Less spectacular is the photographic section of the device, although on paper it should perform quite well. The ASUS ROG Phone 3 has a triple system on its back. This is composed of:
- A Sony IMX686 main sensor with 64 megapixel resolution
- An ultra wide angle with 13 megapixels of resolution and a 125º field of view
- And a Macro lens with 5 megapixel resolution
The photographic set is completed by a front camera with a 24 megapixel sensor. At the moment the manufacturer has not provided more information about the photographic set, making it clear that it is not one of the most important aspects of the device.
Price and availability
It is clear that, at least on a technical level, the ASUS ROG Phone 3 is a pretty impressive mobile. In addition to all the aforementioned, it has the latest in connectivity, a design that will surely appeal to the most gamers users and a high quality sound system. However, we have our doubts whether it makes sense to put such beast hardware in a mobile device. After all, the vast majority of current games can work with a much less powerful mobile.
Our doubts grow when we see the price of the ASUS ROG Phone 3. As we already anticipated, the new ASUS device will arrive in three versions:
- ASUS ROG Phone 3 with 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB with a price of 1,000 euros
- ASUS ROG Phone 3 with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB with a price of 1,100 euros
- ASUS ROG Phone 3 Strix Edition with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB with a price of 800 euros
