Android has always been accused of being a fragmented operating system. When the media and the competition launch these criticisms against the Google platform, they argue that Android mobile phones do not work with the same version, so that there are multiple diversifications of the same product. In fact, to be specific, it must be said Steve Jobs, the CEO of Apple, already said once that the main problem with Android was fragmentation. The fact is that today Google has published a graph in which it is evident that the majority of users already have version 2.1 or higher.
The data couldn't be fresher. All the information regarding the use of Android versions ended up being collected yesterday, December 1. The data is especially interesting for developers of Android applications, but it is also useful for us to see to what extent Android can be considered an overly fragmented operating system. It is true that there are multiple versions swarming around the world's mobile phones, but Google data reveals that 83% of phones already have version 2.1 Éclair or higher.
Considering the same graph, we can see that the percentage of devices with obsolete versions such as Android 1.5 and 1.6 is quite small, with 16.9% of the total of this android pie. Much broader is the range of terminals that already works with Android 2.1 Éclair (39.6%) or Android 2.2 (43.4%), a version that has already become the majority. Right now, the Android community is waiting for a new version.
We refer to Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the same one that will make devices like the Samsung Nexus S or the Samsung Galaxy S II work, as well as being updated in great tools like the Samsung Galxy Tab. With the arrival of Gingerbread, the Google graph will change completely again, waiting for the majority of advanced mobile phones to receive the update soon and the statistics to stabilize again.
