On June 17, 3,000 units of the new Xiaomi Mi 9T (internationally known as Redmi K20) went on sale and they ended up running out in 45 minutes. An all-screen phone, with a retractable camera, that came at a sale price of 300 euros and that caught the attention of many people. I had the opportunity to be one of those who acquired this terminal at a sale price and I have been with it for several days, testing its different functions and applications, trying to get as much play as possible.
And from these days of testing the following special today is born. We are going to tell you some of the most interesting tricks that we can do with the Xiaomi Mi 9T with MIUI custom layer. How to remove the sound from the retractable camera? And change the fingerprint animation on the screen? We have the answers to these and more questions in the next special.
How do I remove the navigation buttons and activate the gestures?
In MIUI 10 they anticipated one of the most anticipated functions of Android 9 Pie, on-screen gestures. That is, to be able to go to the home screen, back on a screen or access multitasking by sliding a finger, instead of clicking on an icon on the screen… icon that is part of a navigation bar that ends up taking up screen space. And make no mistake: the 6.39-inch screen of this Xiaomi Mi 9T wins a lot without a navigation bar. How do we remove it and activate the gestures?
We are going to go to the phone settings. In the section 'System and device' we have 'Full screen'. In this new screen we can choose between the navigation buttons and the full screen. In addition, we can also choose, within the 'back' gesture that we can return to the immediately previous application and activate the gesture twice when we play so that the game is not interrupted.
However, if you want to keep the navigation buttons but in certain applications it is hidden, you can configure them in 'Full screen mode'. Thus, you will always have the buttons except in the applications that you select.
NFC payment does not work. What I do?
The new Xiaomi Mi 9T has NFC connectivity, very useful if we want to pay with our mobile and we don't want to carry our cards with us. What is the problem? That both with the Google Play application and with other similar ones (for example, within the ING application we can activate mobile payment) we have to configure certain parameters so that everything goes correctly. And they are these steps.
The first thing we have to do is correctly configure our card through Google Pay, the ING application or your bank's own, if it gives you the possibility of making payments with your mobile. Second, we are going to modify the following:
We have to place the application with which we are going to pay as default. To do this, we are going to go to the 'Settings' application within it, to 'Wi-Fi and Networks' and, finally, 'More'.
Within this screen we activate the NFC and click the 'Touch and pay' section. In 'Default application' we place the one that we are going to use to pay with the mobile. Finally, in ' Position of the security element ' we choose the option 'Use HCE Wallet'.
How do I activate the 'Ambient screen' and the drawing that appears?
This Xiaomi Mi 9T has a function usually reserved for the high-end, the 'Ambient Display' or 'Ambient Display'. It is a fixed LED image on the lock screen that informs you of the date and time, battery percentage and notification icons. Thanks to the fact that this phone has an AMOLED panel, in which blacks are achieved by literally turning off the pixels, having the 'Ambient Screen' activated does not mean excessive battery consumption and is very useful as we can see, from a look, what time it is without unlocking the device.
To activate the 'Ambient Display' we are going to go to the phone settings, 'Personal', 'Screen' and ' Ambient Screen '. Within this screen we have:
- The possibility of programming this function, preventing it from being activated for as long as you want.
- Change the design that appears, or delete it completely and leave only the clock (there are 16 different designs).
How do I activate dark mode?
Thanks to MIUI 10 we can have the system in a completely dark mode, something that will appreciate the autonomy of this terminal by having an AMOLED panel. To activate the dark mode you just have to do the following:
On the same screen where we have previously activated the 'Ambient Display' we locate ' Dark Mode '. We just have to activate the switch to turn it on and deactivate it to turn it off. At the moment there is no way to schedule it: it would be a good idea to have the option to activate automatically according to local time. Hopefully this comes with new updates.
How do I make the 'Themes' section available?
Logically, when we put the region of our mobile in the initial configuration, we put 'Spain'. What many do not know is that when putting our country, for rights reasons, the 'Themes' application is not enabled. You can see it, but when you enter, we cannot download themes or install them, or anything. How do we get it? We do the following.
In the system settings screen, in the search engine, we are going to write 'region'. On the next screen we search, for example, 'Andorra'. We select and reopen the 'Themes' application. As you can see, it is now fully functional, and you can download and install the ones you like the most. In addition, thanks to putting 'Andorra' as a region of the system we will be able to gain a little more volume, since due to national laws the high volume is protected by security.
How do I show the notification icons?
MIUI is a layer that, personally, I like, but it has things that I can't understand. And it is that the user has, necessarily, to activate the option so that the icons of the notifications are displayed. If not, only three dots will appear in the upper right of the notification bar. Be careful, we are not talking about the error, common in Xiaomi terminals with notch, that the notifications did not remain in the bar, disappearing seconds after being shown… we are talking about that if we do not activate the following function we will not see the icons of the notifications received.
To do this, we are going to go to the system settings, 'System and device', 'Notifications and status bar'. Within this screen we look for the switch corresponding to ' Show notification icons '. We activate it and that's it.
Can I improve the sound of the headphones?
The answer is yes. You will not get miracles and everything will depend on the audio quality of the headphones you have but if we do what is described below we will find an improvement in the audio. The first thing we are going to do is connect the headphones to the mobile using its minijack cable (this does not work with Bluetooth wireless headphones) and we go, in the settings, to 'Additional settings', 'Headphones and audi0 effects'. We have two possibilities to improve the audio of our headphones:
- Hi-Fi Audio. Reduces noise and distortion and increases audio quality.
- My Sound Enhancer. Whether you have headphones from the Xiaomi brand or any other, go looking for the model that offers the best sound.
The two options are exclusive, having to choose one or the other. The equalizer only works with the 'Audio Hi-Fi' function
What about the fingerprint unlocking animation, can I change it?
When you place your finger on the screen to unlock it, a particular animation appears that identifies the finger and proceeds to give free access to the device. This animation is activated by default with a certain design, but we can change it if we don't like it and prefer another. For this we are going to do the following.
In the phone settings, under 'System and device', 'Password lock screen', 'Manage fingerprints'. Enter your custom security pattern and then click on ' Fingerprint Animation '. Here you can choose between four different animations.
I am bothered by the sound of the retractable camera, how do I disable it?
One of the great design novelties of this Xiaomi Mi 9T is its retractable, telescopic or pop-up camera. Thanks to it, the new model of the Mi family can have a screen without a notch or anything to interrupt it, thus achieving an infinite screen with very small frames, especially at the top. This camera also comes with sound and LED light, something that can bother many of us: it is very annoying to take out the camera and be drawing attention wherever we go.
Personally, I have left the LED light and opted to cut out the sound. You can do the opposite, eliminate the light and leave the sound, as you wish. For this we are going to do the following.
How do I take wide-angle photos?
In this Xiaomi Mi 9T we can enjoy photos taken with a wide-angle lens on its main camera. Thanks to the wide angle, we will be able to capture much more space to the sides in the photos we take. This comes in handy when, for example, we want to capture a landscape with very striking effects. To take a photo using the wide angle we are going to do the following.
We enter the camera application and go to the 'photo' option. This is where we will take the photos in automatic mode. If you look at it, within the field of view of the camera, we have three points, arranged one next to the other. Each of them is accompanied by a number.
- 1x: normal photo, like the one we usually take on any mobile
- 0.6x: Wide angle photo on, you will see much more space to the sides
- 2x: telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom magnification
In this way we can switch between the different modes simply by choosing the right dot.
How can I have app drawer?
One of the hallmarks of MIUI is to have all the applications out, on the device screens, while in stock Android it is the user who decides which ones are out, keeping the rest for the application drawer. Whether you want to try it out or use it, the solution is Poco Launcher, a launcher distributed by MIUI itself and one of its main options is to offer the user the application drawer. You can download it for free from the Play Store app store.
