Customs and tariffs, these are the changes for AliExpress in 2021 and that you should know to know how the purchases you make will affect you do on the platform. If you are a buyer in AliExpress, the information that we explain below interests you because it can affect your pocket.
AliExpress is the Asian giant of low-priced products that was born in 2009 The affordable prices that most of the items that are sell on the platform has led millions of people to buy on this eCommerce app.
In 2019, AliExpress registered 42 million orders that meant Alibaba, its owner company, a turnover of 1,363 million euros. Despite these enormous billing data, Amazon is still ahead of the Chinese company.
This paradise of products at really attractive prices may come to an end with the new changes that are going to take place in AliExpress in the coming monthsThe reason? A new package of measures that the European Union is going to implement and that will oblige sellers who have tax offices outside the EU to pay taxes and tariffs.
With this decision the European Union intends to implement some economic measures with the aim of making the local market more competitive of the member countries.
These taxes and tariffs until now were requested by the customs services to end users, since the fact of buying in a non-EU country for legal purposes was considered an import.
It will be on July 1 when these economic measures come into force. From that date all vendors and companies whose headquarters tax is outside the European Union will be required to register in one of the member countries of the EU to operate under what will be known as "Single Window".
In this process, sellers will have the obligation to declare the sale of any of the items and thus pay VAT and tariffs if that product exceeds a certain gross price.
Let's see in detail the amount of taxes depending on the value of the product:
- On items that have a value equal to or less than 22 euros there will be no applicable taxes or any type of percentage. These items will be exempt from tariffs and VAT.
- Items with an amount of more than 22 euros and up to 150 euros will be exempt from tariffs, but will have to pay VAT. In this case, VAT will be 21% on the gross value of the product.
- Items worth more than 150 euros will have to pay both duties and VAT taxes. The percentage in the case of tariffs will be 2.5% while VAT will be 21% of the gross value of the product.
Currently, if these tariffs and customs are detected by the Tax Agency, it claims the tax from the end user because it considered that it had made an import of products buying outside the European Union.
Until June 30, the Tax Agency can continue sending requests for those who have purchased on AliExpress and similar platforms.
After July 1, the fact that companies and sellers have to assume these tariffs and the VAT of the products, the most likely thing is that the price of those will become more expensive articles that exceed 22 and 150 euros.
