WhatsApp allows users to protect themselves from those who spam, harass, spread fake news, or promote inappropriate content. To do this, they only have to use the option that allows them to report and block them.
An option that can be applied to both contacts and groups. If you don't know how to perform this step, don't worry, we'll explain it below, along with a new option that WhatsApp will include in the future.
How to report a WhatsApp group
If you find a group that viralizes inappropriate content, generates spam or is part of a fraud, you can report it to WhatsApp. To do this, just follow these steps:
- Tap the group name to view the profile information
- Scroll to the bottom and you will find the option “Report group”
Or you can do this directly from the group chat, if you're still a part:
- Open the menu with the three dots and choose “More”
- Among the options you will find “Report”
No matter which method you choose, WhatsApp will ask you to confirm the action, as you see in the second image. A simple process that will only take a few seconds. And of course, the same dynamic applies if you want to report a contact or a stranger who contacts you on WhatsApp.
Once the process is complete, the WhatsApp team will analyze the report, and as appropriate, take action with the reported group. And to speed up this process and verify what the report is about, WhatsApp will apply a small change, as we tell you below.
WhatsApp will ask for more information to verify the reports
As mentioned in WABetainfo, a new reporting system is being tested in the beta version of the WhatsApp application. Although the dynamic for reporting and denouncing contacts or groups remains the same, WhatsApp requests a copy of the recent messages of that chat.
That way, you can analyze whether the report is reliable and whether there are grounds to take action against the reported group or contact. This information is not optional, so if you want to continue with the reporting process, you agree to send that information to the WhatsApp team.
This dynamic is not yet present in the stable version of WhatsApp, but it is possible that it will arrive in the coming months.
