How to protect your video calls through Zoom
Table of contents:
Zoom is one of the most used applications in recent months. Obviously, the promotion of teleworking and distance education have a lot to do with it. The application, which is constantly updated with continuous news, incorporates new security and privacy measures
From now on, users will enjoy greater protection thanks to the new end-to-end encryption From now on, the key that allows connections to be decrypted, will no longer be hosted on Zoom's servers and will be stored on each device. Thanks to this feature, a third party is prevented from eavesdropping on a video call.
How to activate this new feature in Zoom
End-to-end encryption is not enabled by default. To enable it, you must go to your profile settings, logging into Zoom.us. Then, go to the Security section, as you can see in the following image.
Then, locate the option Encrypted meetings end-to-end (E2E) and activate the slider that you will find to its right.
If you haven't done so before, you need to verify your phone number. Zoom will send you a text message with a code that you will need to enter in the next step. After this, you have the possibility to make all communications end-to-end encrypted by default. Select the option End-to-end encryption
Although this process improves the privacy of your conversations and allows you to enjoy greater security, the company itself warns that, for the moment, some functions will not be available with this type encryption For example, with E2E encryption it will not be possible to make automatic recordings in the cloud or to transmit the meeting via streaming. Nor can you create person-to-person chats or enable small group rooms. Also, reactions are disabled and no one can join a meeting before the host. Finally, in meetings with end-to-end encryption, the telephone connection or through services such as Skype is not available.
All These restrictions are temporary and it is expected that the company will eventually make them available whether using encryption in the cloud or using you have enabled end-to-end encryption.
Other Zoom Security Measures You Should Activate Now
In addition to the new encryption, Zoom already incorporates some security measures that you should know about and that you can activate to further protect your calls and video calls. All these options are available in the Security section of the Zoom web configuration.
- Enable the waiting room for unknown users Thanks to the waiting room, you will prevent users outside your meeting from sneaking in unexpected. Of course, remember to consult it regularly so that no contact is left waiting and cannot access the conference.
- Permanently activates the access code. This way, users will always have to enter a password to access your meetings, even those that have not been scheduled.
- Requires access code for users connecting by phone. Users connecting by phone will need to enter the same passcode as those connecting via the Android app or desktop client.
- Prevents the access password from being included in the invitation link. This option makes it difficult for meetings to be shared and requires users to enter the password even if they click the invite link.
- Block connections from other countries. Use this function if you are sure that the participants will be connecting from your country of residence.
Ultimately, making your Zoom meetings more secure depends, in part, on the time you spend adjusting all of these preferences. Doing so can prevent you from getting scared.
