Google Maps is constantly being updated to include improved navigation. During the pandemic, the map application has added very useful functions to avoid an increase in infections and make navigation safe. Warnings are now included when using public transport. And even in some countries it informs you if the border is closed due to confinement. The latest update comes with an interesting novelty: the possibility of knowing the areas with the highest incidence of Covid,a function that had already been leaked previously, and that finally it's official.
This new function allows us to know which areas of each country are most affected by coronavirus cases. EThe objective of this function is to inform users of the risk when traveling to those areas. Google is based on the data provided by Johns Hopkins University and will corroborate it with the official data for each region, as well as those provided by the World He alth Organization. The function shows the areas in red to alert users that the level of contagion could be high To find out if a state/province has greater poverty of Covid, the number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants is calculated.
In addition to the area in red, Google Maps will also show if the number of cases or the level of tests for Covid is increasing or decreasingAgain, based on official data and the rate of tests carried out, since the level of cases could increase because massive tests are being carried out in that area or simply because the number of cases detected is lower than a few days ago.
This is how you can activate the COVID map on Google Maps
When the option is activated, the 'Covid Info' layer will appear in the 'Map Details' section. Remember that this option may take a few days to update, so do not forget to take into account the official data. The option may not yet be available in some countries. Google Maps will launch the function this week in all countries where the platform is available, including Spain. At the moment we do not know if Google will show the most affected neighborhoods in each city (a very useful function, especially in the Community of Madrid) or simply the provinces with the highest number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
How can we see the level of incidence of Covid on Google Maps? First of all, it will be necessary to update the application. The incidence 'radar' for coronavirus cases is activated as an additional layer to the satellite view of Google Maps. Therefore, when opening the application we have to click on the Layers icon that appears in the upper area. Next, we select the option that says ‘Covid-19 info’.
In addition to this option, it is recommended to use the Covid Radar application, which allows us to find out if we have been in contact with a positive case of coronavirus.
