Android Auto has many features that enhance the user experience when in driving mode. It not only takes into account those essential options to reach your destination, it also integrates the dynamics of your Xiaomi mobile apps. And of course, WhatsApp could not be missing.
If you don't want to miss any WhatsApp messages while using Android Auto, you can customize some settings. Of course, options that should be used with caution when driving.
How to see WhatsApp notifications on Android Auto
WhatsApp is one of the applications compatible with Android Auto, so you won't have to do any special configuration to see notifications. You only need to have the two apps installed on your mobile with the corresponding permissions.
So open the Android Auto app and look for the Settings section, as you see in the first image. Once you find the Notifications section you will see all the options available to configure the messages that arrive from WhatsApp.
While these are just a few options, they cover different types of situations. Let's see some examples to understand how it works and all the possibilities available:
- I want to see WhatsApp notifications when I receive messages from my contacts
For this you just have to activate the option “Show message notifications”. It works the same way whether you're in driving mode or when the car is stationary.
If you have the route instructions on the screen, it will only notify you that you have a message from a certain contact. So if you want to reply, you'll need to navigate to the main Android Auto screen and use one of your automatic responses, for example, “I'm driving”.
- I want to see notifications from my WhatsApp groups
Android Auto differentiates between notifications you receive from contacts and those belonging to groups. This is an important detail if you only want to focus on the messages from your friends or family, and not be distracted by the hundreds of messages from your groups.
But if you want WhatsApp group notifications to be visible on Android Auto as well, just select the “Show group message notifications” option.
- I want to see the content of notifications in Android Auto
Although Android Auto enables some options to receive notifications, these are basic so that the driver is not distracted on the road. The idea is that you receive the notification, and if you consider it important then you stop the car to respond.
But you can use some options to find out what the WhatsApp message is about. You will see that when a WhatsApp notification arrives, the playback option appears, and if you select it, the Google Assistant will read the message for you.
And if it's a photo, it'll just say that a certain contact says “photo”, and if it's audio it'll say “voice messages”, you won't get much more than that.
So in the case of multimedia content you don't need Google Assistant, since in the notification you will see the image and voice audio icons. On the other hand, there is an option that you can enable to have a bit of context in text messages: “View received messages”.
When you enable this option, Android Auto will show you the first line of the text message. An option that will only be available when you have the car stopped, as you see in the third image.
How to customize WhatsApp notifications in Android Auto
In addition to the basic options we mentioned for viewing WhatsApp notifications, you can also customize how and when they will be displayed in Android Auto, as you can see in the examples.
- I want to mute WhatsApp notifications in Android Auto
To mute WhatsApp messages you can disable all options in “Notifications” in Android Auto. However, note that this setting will affect all messaging apps associated with Android Auto, for example Telegram.
Or you can mute specific contacts or groups from the same notification. As you can see in the image, along with the WhatsApp message notification you will find the “Mute” option.
Once you turn it on, you won't see any messages from muted contacts or groups when you're in driving mode, but they'll be saved in the notification area to check when you stop driving. That is, WhatsApp messages will continue to be available, but they will not be displayed on the screen.
- I want to receive message notifications from my contacts, but mute groups
As we saw before, you just have to enable “Show message notifications” to see notifications from your WhatsApp contacts. And to get rid of group messages, disable the “Show group message notifications” option.
- I want to receive WhatsApp notifications, but keep them private
As you can see in the images we share, Android Auto does not reveal much information in notifications. But if you want to make sure that no part of the content will be visible when you have company, disable the "View received messages" option. That way, the beginning of the message will not be displayed.
And of course, don't play the message, as the Google Assistant will read it out loud.On the other hand, remember that if you disable all notification options, they will not appear in driving mode, but you can check it when you stop the car in the main section of Android Auto.
