Table of contents:
You see an Instagram notification and you find another new mention in a contest that doesn't interest you at all from a friend who always does the same thing. Or even worse. You come across a mention on a hate photo with distasteful content. These are just a couple of examples of how to misuse Instagram features. Options that are there to meet people, credit its creators or flag them in a photo, or even comment on what you think of a post you've seen.Facebook, the owner of Instagram, is up to date on how its social network of photos is used to commit bullying, and for that reason it now has a new tool of the most useful: restrict who can tag or mention you on Instagram.
Avoid tags
Beyond stereotyping, tagging photos can be a real pain on Instagram. And it is that, in addition to pointing out that you appear in a photo, they can be used for evil. To tag yourself in photos in which something vexatious appears, take advantage of this resource to get followers of yours, or simply to annoy. But you can avoid it like this:
- Click on your profile tab.
- Access settings on the three lines in the upper right corner of the screen.
- Click on the Configuration option at the end of the dropdown.
- Access the Privacy section of the settings.
- Click on the labels option.
- Here you can choose three different options for who can tag you in their post: everyone, people you follow or no one.
- You'll also retain the option to manually choose whether or not to appear in a post with the Manually Approve Tags option.
From this moment, and depending on the criteria you have chosen, your account may or may not be linked to photographs and videos of other users . A great way to get rid of all those mentions you don't want or need.
Avoid mentions
Equal or worse are unwanted mentions. Many of them are used in the comments of draws and raffles that have little or nothing to do with you. They are useful to get your attention in the comments of a post, but if you don't want this type of interaction you can also manage it. The process is very similar to what you see on the labels.
- Click on your tab.
- Displays the menu of the three lines in the upper right corner of this screen.
- Click on Settings.
- Now enter the Privacy section.
- This time enter Mentions.
- Here you will see the three options to choose who can and who can't mention you anywhere on Instagram. Choose from everyone, people I follow, or no one.
When you confirm this action you will have already protected your account for certain mentions In this way you can avoid many of the notifications that do not lead you to nothing more than promotions, insults or conversations that do not interest you. Of course, you'll also miss out on good mentions if you disable this option so no one can mention you.
There is still a way to go
Although it is a good proposal from Instagram, this function still seems a bit lame. And it is that you can end up losing mentions or labels that do interest you if you go too restrictive with these functions After all, it is usually our own friends who mention us in contests that are raised on Instagram, for example. It would be interesting to be able to veto only some accounts of those users who usually mention us in these contests. Instead of losing all those mentions from accounts you already follow.
It remains to be seen if, based on Facebook's interest in improving its applications and the experience on its social networks, these anti-bullying and anti-harassment options continue to be refined and developed. And it is that there is still a long way to go in this aspect.
