Netflix try changing the video quality if you're on the go
Last week, a security researcher tweeted that the Netflix app on his Android phone was requesting access to the device's physical activity sensors. Days later, some users echoed that they had the permission activated without any prior notice. What is happening? Apparently, the company would be taking advantage of the new activity recognition permission in Android Q,that allows the device to know if the user is moving while using its applications.
In this case, it's possible that Netflix was using the data to figure out how to buffer the video so the stream doesn't skip while we're on the move. When asked about what happened, Netflix has commented that they have no intention of implementing this feature soon. From the popular streaming content service they have indicated that they are continually testing ways to give its members a better experience. This was simply part of a test to see how they could improve video playback quality when someone is on the move.
Therefore, this feature has only reached the accounts of some users, hence the comments, but they do not plan to officially roll it out to everyone, at least for now. What does seem to be their intention is to launch an exclusive plan only for mobile devices. In fact, this plan has already landed in India for less than 3 euros a month. As you can imagine, it only supports the reproduction of movies, series or documentaries in both mobile as well as tablets. Also, just like the Basic plan, you can only enjoy one screen at a time.
It is not known if this plan will end up landing in Spain. Currently, in our country it is possible to hire three different types of plans. The cheapest is the Basic, for 8 euros per month. This is followed by the Standard, for 12 euros per month, and the Premium, for which you have to pay every 30 days 16 euros.
