Apple will unify iOS and macOS apps in 2021
Table of contents:
It's not new at all, Apple has once again announced that it will combine the apps made for iPhone, iPad and macOS in 2021 The good thing about this is that a couple of years ago we heard the same speech. Apple has said that this way developers will only have to create a simple app, knowing only one type of code for iPhones, iPads and Macs.
The project that will govern this unification has already been launched, which is called Marzipan Apple spoke about it at the Worlwide Developer Conference from last year.We know that Apple started this task by unifying the Home, Stocks, News, and Voice Memo apps directly between iOS and macOS 10.14 Mojave. However, combining all kinds of apps will be a much bigger step.
How will it be possible to port apps from iOS to macOS?
Apple knows that releasing a single universal app for all devices will be a big step, and that's why it's releasing an SDK with which developers will be able to port all their iOS apps to macOS. It is rumored that this new SDK could be presented this year at WWDC, Apple's most important conference focused on development. Not to be confused with the famous keynotes, where products are usually presented.
This step in the industry is not new at all, since Microsoft already wanted to do it with Universal Apps, a concept that perhaps has not succeeded due to the resounding failure of Windows Phone. Microsoft wanted to release the same applications on Windows, tablets and mobile phones with the Windows operating system. However, Apple at the time said it would keep iOS and macOS separate.
Is it a real change? Will it finally arrive?
We ask ourselves this question because it has been a couple of years since people have heard about the subject. However, with the great power of the iPad Pro and what has diminished the performance of MacBooks (not Pros), it is possible that this change will come as and as they have commented. Now, we are clear that this type of apps will only be those of a less professional nature. Well, today it is practically impossible to think of an app like Photoshop that could run on both systems at full capacity.
However, in the future, it is possible that this will be achieved. But we believe that porting these types of heavier and more professional apps will not be something that will be done in 2021, it is possible that there are still a few more years to go and some advances in the mobile environment.Although by then it is possible that mobile phones, tablets and laptops will already be the same, who knows…
