How to create restaurant lists on Google Maps
At one time or another, we all end up offering recommendations to friends. And I don't know about you, but I usually create a list for you.
Sometimes it's for a friend from out of town who's visiting town and wants to know where I think they should go for dinner. Other times they are a little more elaborate. For example, recommendations for an entire city or even a country that someone plans to visit for a vacation that I (or you) happen to be experts (at least in your opinion). We can even create lists by specialized topics, such as the type of food. Or by places, distinguishing by neighborhoods.
For example, a list can be about what, in your opinion, are the best Italian restaurants in the center of Seville. Any type of property can be used to differentiate places by these characteristics. And not only with restaurants, places to drink or breweries. We can also do it with monuments, museums or any other place, because the luck of Maps is that all kinds of sites recognize and categorize them.
Now, with built-in Google Maps, sending recommendation lists can be as simple as sending a link to someone else. With lists, I can create a list of all the restaurants you like in town and then Google will map them out for you. That means whoever sends it can figure out where my picks are for themselves.
They can also access individual selections to determine things like hours or if a place sells food. Lists you create within features can be saved as public or private So if you're creating a list you can make it public so anyone can see it. If you have a list that you would prefer to keep to yourself, then you can choose to set the list to private.
Completed lists can be shared with colleagues via text, email, social media, and most popular messaging apps, so they can be shared with literally almost anyone. When a friend gets your list, they can choose to follow it, which means it's available on Google Maps for them to always see and use.
Creating a list within Google Maps is a fairly simple process and only requires that you (and your friends you send the list to) have an Android or iOS device and have the Google Maps app installed. Here's how to make it happen step by step.
1. Find what you want to add to a Google Maps list
The first step in creating a new Google Maps list is to find the first thing you want to add to that list. Therefore, for me that would imply, being in Seville, looking for a flamenco tablao where you can drink and eat some typical Andalusian tapas while watching flamenco dancing and singing. And I want to add it to the list, I look for it like when I search for directions to drive, for example. When you see the place you want in the search results, tap it.
2. Go to the page of that place
Once you've selected a location, at the bottom of the screen you'll see the name of the location you're looking for, like this as the time it will take to get there if you go from your current location at that very moment.
Touch the location at the bottom of the page to make it appear full screen.
3. Select Save
The company's business page should tell you its average rating on Google, a brief description of what is done there; whether to eat, drink cocktails or watch sports broadcasts, for example. For example, my search for La Carbonería in Seville says that it is a "Taverna for tapas, tablao flamenco and literary corner in an old coal warehouse with patio and cobbled floor".
Below the business name and above its description, you'll see three buttons: a button to call the business, one for your website, and a Save button. Tap the Save button.
4. Select the Google Maps list you want
When you touch save, a number of list options will appear. You can save the location of your favourites, places you want to go, starred place or “New list”.
You can choose any of these you want, but for the purpose of this demo, we'll select New List.
5. Name your Google Maps list
When you select New List, a box will appear asking you to name your list. Give your list a name that describes it enough to make it easier for you (and the people you send it to) find itlater.
For my list of flamenco tablaos, I'm going to call it «My favorite traditional places». Keep in mind that your list name must be less than 40 characters, so be creative, but try not to get too long.
When you've found the perfect name and entered it, click Create in the lower right corner of that popup box. You will see a short pop-up message informing you that your location has been saved to the list.
If you want to see all the places you've saved, you can tap the link inside that popup window to display your entire list as it is now.
6. Add something else to your Google Maps list
It's basically that. Repeat steps 1 through 4 for each item you want to add to your list, and then, instead of adding a new list as we did in Step 5, select the list we just created in the menu when it appears.
Once you've added everything you want to your List, you can display it whenever you want by clicking the three lines on the left side of that search box we used in step one, and then selecting “Your places” from there, navigate to the “Saved” tab, and then click on your list.
Once you're in a list, you can share by clicking the sideways V at the top of the screen. Tapping that link will generate a link that you can then copy and paste into a text message, tweet, email, or any other social network you like.
