Did you know that our country is the seventh in the European Union that wastes the most food? Every year we throw away more than 7 , 7 million tons of food. Or what is the same: the equivalent of 190 ships like the Titanic, piled one on top of the other.

An application born in Denmark has just landed in our country so that we can also start to stop throwing away food. But what exactly is it? Well, very easy. The application works so that supermarkets, restaurants, bakeries, hotels, prepared food stores or greengrocers stop wasting food, selling their surpluses for an affordable price.

In this way, responsible citizens have the option to take advantage of that quality food, which would otherwise go directly to the trash . And that they can get for a much more affordable price than it would be usual. The first city in which the service is available in Spain is Madrid.

It all starts in Madrid

More than 12,000 establishments have already joined the Too Good To Go movement throughout Europe And for now, there are already nine countries, among which is Spain, which are part of this initiative. They are Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Switzerland and finally, Spain.

Of course, at the moment Too Good To Go will only work in Madrid So if you live in the capital or move near there , you will have the opportunity to get food at a good price.Most of the products are between 2 and 5 euros. You can get prepared dishes, bread, pastries, cakes, fruits and vegetables, meat and even sushi.

Oriol Reull, Country Manager of Too Good To Go, explained that many Spanish establishments and chains have decided to join the movement. In fact, those responsible for this application say that the application will soon work in more Spanish cities, apart from Madrid. In the meantime, you can start testing it in the capital.

Getting started with Too Good To Go

If you want to start wasting food with Too Good To Go, we recommend you do the following:

1. The first thing, logically, will be download Too Good To Go. You have it available for both iOS and Android. The application is not too heavy and is quick to install.

2. As soon as you start, you will need to register. You can do this with your username and address, but you also have the option to log in with your Facebook account In this case, you will also receive an email in the mailbox to confirm the address.

3. Next you will have to give permissions to the application to access your location. This is a basic requirement to be able to find places near you. If you haven't turned on location, you'll need to do that now too. Keep in mind, however, that at the moment Too Good To Go only works in Madrid and in one center. The Ibis Madrid Centro – Malasaña, which was the first to sign up to the initiative.

For now you can take advantage of the excess food from the breakfast buffet. You can order a surprise pack for 2.50 euros, instead of the 10 euros it normally costs.

4. The package or product file you have chosen will indicate a pick-up time. You will have to select the amount you want and add a card or choose to pay through PayPal. At the end you will only have to press the Add card and buy button.

Remember to go to the appointment at the time indicated by the establishment and bring your own bag to collect the products. This way, you will close the savings cycle.
