It has only been a few days since Fortnite for Android has been available for some Samsung users and the first security problems have already surfaced. As we told you, the decision not to include the game in the Google Play Store did not sit well with security experts.
Epic Games, the developer of the game, decided to skip this step which guarantees you the 30% you would otherwise have to pay Google. But downloads outside the official store carry significant risks, which not all users have the capacity to assume.
Just yesterday we told you that the Fortnite Android installer allowed you to download malware, so Epic Games had to fix the problem. It did so just 48 hours after Google itself detected it.
But it seems that the security problems have only just begun. Researchers are sure that a party of problems is ahead, which will expand as the game becomes more popular among Android users.
Why are we expecting more security issues?
The answer is very simple, according to experts. The main problem is in the fact that Fortnite is not going to be available through the Google Play Store. Epic has chosen a somewhat dangerous route for users to access the game.A game that millions of users will want massive access to and will probably do anything to get it.
Although on some occasions Google itself has been sneaked in with fake applications,at least the official store has mechanisms to avoid fraud and, if it exists, strike it down quickly.
Apps outside the Google Play Store are nine times more likely to contain malware. More than 125 million players – many of them inexperienced – will download the game as soon as it is available. This is a huge mass of users, too succulent for cybercriminals to let her escape.
Millions of unsuspecting users will have to enable the option to install apps from unknown sources. And that is a risk that many users will take without knowing the true scope. And it is that, although the application of Epic Games will not have any danger for users, surely an infinity of malicious applications will appear.
Side discharge is not safe
It seems that Epic Games has no intention of letting Google take 30% of the revenue from downloads, as it does with other companies. The popularity of Fortnite makes this promotion unnecessary: There are millions of players who are willing to buy all kinds of content for the game.
However, Fortnite players may end up paying dearly in the end. Fortnite is so attractive to players. Most likely, they trust the download from Epic Games, which in principle will be safe, but that is not common at all and carries serious risks.
The bug detected by Google was reported to Epic Games before it was made public. But the company asked the Mountain View company to wait 90 days to disclose it. However, he only gave them a week.
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney was quick to criticize Google for announcing the bug so early. His argument alluded, specifically, to the fact that with so little time it is possible that the patch has not arrived for all users.
False versions keep multiplying
To all this, it should be noted that the first day after Fortnite for Android was released, fake versions of the game made up a third of the malware samples that were discovered that same week.
These were doctored versions, full of , that couldn't do much damage, but were by no means nothing that could look like the version official Fortnite for AndroidSecurity experts are convinced that this will only get worse as Fortnite for Android becomes more popular.
