That some of the applications we use every day know as much about us as our best friends is something we should already take into account. Above all, already knowing what some of these apps are capable of doing with them, as is the case of the Cambridge Analytica and Facebook scandal. We are not going to stop using them for that reason, although there are many who have decided to do so, but it does not hurt to have a document that clearly informs us of how much information we are talking about.
Currently, the user can download all personal information collected by Facebook and Instagram. These two are joined by the one that was yet to complete the Zuckerberg emporium, WhatsApp. Now you can download everything WhatsApp knows about you, in a detailed report that, however, will not be accessible at the moment, but is a kind of 'commission '. According to the application, it may take a maximum of 72 hours to arrive, but in our particular case we did not have to wait more than a couple.
What does WhatsApp know about us?
To request a full report of what WhatsApp knows about you, you must do the following:
Make sure you have the version of Android 2.18.128. To find out what version you have on your phone, open Google Play and enter WhatsApp app page. Click on 'More information' and lower the screen completely. You can see what you have downloaded in 'Version'.
If the version you have downloaded corresponds to number 2.18.128, open your WhatsApp application and enter the three-point menu located at the top right of the screen, in Start. Later we enter 'Account' and 'Request info. of my account’
On the screen that appears below we will see a button through which we can request the report. We press it and, then, we will only have to wait for a notification that we already have the report available The notification that we receive comes in the form of a message Ordinary WhatsApp.
By clicking on the notification, we will access the report request screen. Now we will have to export the report, which comes in a compressed .zip format. To do this we just have to click on 'Export report'. A series of applications will appear to which we can send the report and then read it. We have sent the report to our email, so you can select 'Gmail' or the application you use to manage your emails.
How to read your WhatsApp report
Once the report has been sent to your email, we will proceed to read it. For it:
- Open the .zip file.
- You will see two different files inside. You have to open the one with the icon of your web browser, be it Firefox, Chrome, etc. It is an html file that you can read through your browser.
- The GDPR report will open in a new tab: here you can see everything WhatsApp stores about you, such as the type of device from which you connect, the last time you were online in the app, all the phone numbers of your contacts, your profile picture, the groups you belong to and blocked numbers.
It is also interesting that you pay attention to the section 'Did you choose to unsubscribe from sharing data?', since here Let's see if we decide to share our data with WhatsApp. Everything will depend on what we choose at the time, an option that we cannot change now. We are happy to know, however, and seeing the report, that WhatsApp does not collect messages from our conversations, nor does it record our location when we share it with one of our contacts.
