Just yesterday, January 2, users of Pixel 5X and Pixel 6P terminals woke up with great news: thanks to a Pixel 2 camera modification, they could enjoy portrait mode on their devices. A portrait mode that is achieved thanks to a post-processing effect and not thanks to the double lens game, as happens with terminals like the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 or the Huawei Mate 10. Well, the joy extends to more terminals. If you are one of the lucky ones who already have Android 8 Oreo installed on their phones, they will also be able to enjoy portrait mode, even if their equipment only has one lens.
XDA developer Arnova8G2 has been in charge of 'adapting' the mod that we mentioned before to make it work on other Android terminals that They are not the ones that carry the Google brand. In addition, they must have Snapdragon processor models from the 600 and 800 families. Personally, I have tested it on a OnePlus 3T terminal and it works like a charm... with certain limitations, which we will explain later. It has also been successfully tested on terminals such as the Motorola Moto G5s Plus, Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (the version that includes the Snapdragon processor) and the Xiaomi Mi5 and Mi5S.
How do I download the app to get portrait mode?
If you have a terminal that has the Android 8 Oreo version installed and has Snapdragon, 600 or 800 families, you have to go to this link and download the APK of the camera mod. To be able to install applications from unknown sources, you must give permission to the browser: a pop-up window will appear asking for your permission.Once installed, you will be able to use portrait mode.
If for some reason this mod doesn't work on your phone, either because it doesn't seem to take photos or the screen goes black, or your phone doesn't respond, don't worry. Just uninstall that version and go to this link. There are users who have reported failures when installing the mod that we have offered you in the first place and this other version works the same and effectively.
How does portrait mode work?
Taking pictures with the portrait mode of this app is extremely easy. Once you have installed the file, open the application and go to the three-line hamburger menu that you can see located in the upper left part of it. Of all the options that appear, you must of course select 'Portrait'.Warn you that portrait mode only appears when the camera detects people. It does not activate even if you see cats or dogs in the foreground, or objects.
Focus on the selected person by touching the screen with your finger and shoot. The application will start working and will end up offering you two photos: one with the blur effect applied and the other without applying it That's all: you shouldn't make strange movements with your phone or touch up a posteriori. Just shoot and portrait mode on.
Disadvantages of portrait mode on other non-Pixel phones
Although it seems obvious, it must be said: your mobile camera is what it is, and that's how it will take the portraits. The application does not work miracles, although its HDR+ mode helps us to take better photos in poor lighting conditionsAnd the effect takes a while to apply, although nothing to make us lose patience. On the other hand, the portrait mode only works, at the moment, in the main camera of the phone, so the selfie camera is out of the question.
