Few know about them, but Facebook lets you organize all your contacts on the social network through friend lists They are a resource really helpful. And not only for better organizing your friendships. With these lists you can establish different privacy filters to decide at any time which groups can see your posts and which ones cannot (for example, your bosses, family”¦). Its configuration may seem a bit cumbersome, so let's go through it step by step.
Create friend lists
To be able to use the privacy options with specific groups of contacts we must have them well organized. That's where friend lists come into play. To create the first one, we must access this section. We will find it in the left column of our Facebook wall if we access it from a computer, under the “Explore” category.
Once we have decided what name we will put on our first list, we can decide who we will include in it. All that remains is to press the “Create” button. If you forget to include someone, don't worry: you can always edit from the same section.
In addition to these manually created groups, Facebook incorporates what it calls “Smart Lists”; They use the information that has been added to sections such as “training and employment” or “hometown” in the profile to classify them automatically. That is why you may find some already generated by the social network, such as the one called “Restricted access”: all the people you include in it will only see your publications shared publicly. It is a good solution if we do not want to reject a friend request from someone we know but we also do not want them to see our most personal information.
Another interesting list is that of “acquaintances”, especially to include those people with whom we want to share less content. It can be easily selected at the time of publishing something. You only have to choose “Friends except acquaintances” in the publication box. You can also add more people in a personalized way.
Another advantage of lists is that you can access their publications in the same collection; that is, you can create a personalized wall made up of the posts of its members. To do this, you just have to click on the list you want to see.
Configure the privacy of our publications
Once we have organized our friends, we can move on to deciding what posts and information we will share with them. From our wall, we must go to the configuration panel located in the drop-down that is in the upper right part. Once there we select “privacy” and we will locate “Who can see my stuff?” with several subsections that will help us:
⦠“Who can see the posts you make from now on?”. In this section you can manage the default settings of your publications. You can always change it every time you share something on your timeline.
⦠“Do you want to limit the audience of posts you've shared with your friends' friends or made public? ”. It is a section in which you can apply the new privacy settings to your publications prior to said change.Fast and effective.
⦠“Who can see your friends list?”. Here you have the possibility to stop and decide if you want everyone to see who your contacts are. Or, if you prefer to be a little more reserved and share them only with one of your lists.
As we have said, when sharing an update of our status on Facebook, we have the possibility to reselect the people to whom our publications will be addressedYou can choose between “Public”, where anyone can see it even if they are not registered on the social network; “Friends (and friends of anyone who's been tagged)” or “Only me”, whose statuses will only be visible to you on your timeline, although if you tag someone else they'll also be able to see it. Lastly, we have “Custom”, to share publications by selecting a few people, or to hide them from both lists and specific contacts.
Once you follow these steps to configure Facebook privacy through friends lists, you won't have any more problems publishing your statuses and photos. You just have to choose well who you decide to share them with.
