To download maps in Google Maps to view offline you only have to go to the app store and download it if you don't have it yet. We remind you that the application is completely free. Once installed on your phone, we proceed to open it. The entire Maps interface changed recently, so we are going to explain what you can find in this app.
The first thing we see is our location on the map. At the bottom, a tab in which to choose what is our usual means of transport If you pull this tab, you will access all kinds of useful information, such as restaurants , bus stops or ATMs that you have nearby. If you click on the three lines menu, you will access the app settings.
This is where you can find the section for downloading maps.If you click on it, the application will tell you if you want to download the area corresponding to your home We recommend that you do so, as it is a location that you should always have available, whatever the coverage conditions.
How to download your home map
When you open the application, the area of your house will automatically appear on the map. Pull the bottom tab up and look for the option »Download» The next screen will indicate the area you are going to download, what the download will occupy and the free space you have left. In our case, the map occupies 175 MB, so we advise you to download via WiFi and making sure you have space.
We proceed to click on the »Download» option. Depending on your connection, the download will finish in more or less time. This download takes place in the background, so you don't have to worry about anything and keep using your terminal.
If you go back to the menu, to the "Offline areas" section, you will be able to verify that it has been downloaded correctly. Now, you will be able to see the zone corresponding to your home even if you don't have mobile data.
How to download any zone to view without data
If you are going on a trip soon and want to download the map of the city you are going to visit, the procedure is very simple. Open the application and search for the place you are going to visit. Let's imagine that you are going to go to Paris soon, and you should use the city map without data. Open the app and search for »Paris», just like we did before with your house. Pull the bottom tab up and click on "Download".
Where are the maps stored?
To later see the maps you have downloaded in the Google application, you just have to go to the settings menu and look for the "Offline areas" option.In this section you can change the name of the map because, by default, it is saved with the name of »area X». To do this, click on the title of the map and then on the pencil. Write the name you want and simply hit back. It will be saved automatically.
In "Offline Zones" you have a gear setting in which you can update the downloaded zones automatically, the place to save the maps (whether on the card or on the phone) and other parameters to save battery.
