The developer of Pokémon GO, Niantic, has started to remit a large number of the permanent bans that you applied to different user accounts during these last few weeks. This was announced yesterday by the American company itself in its corporate blog The CEO of Niantic, John Hanke , ensures that most of the permanent bans carried out were against users who used external applications who violated the game's terms and conditions. Most of these applications were maps or radars that made it easier to find Pokémon, such as the now defunct Pokévision. Niantic has taken the fight against this type of application very seriously and since the beginning of this month of August has applied permanent bans on thousands of accounts of users around the world.
But it's not just these well-known applications like Pokévision that cause bans. There have been certain cases, in which other mapping tools have been used that are less well known but still collected user information and sent it to Niantic's servers, something that Hanke says, has similarities with what would be a denial of service attack, also called a DDoS attack ( Distributed Denial of Service), an attack on a computer system or network that causes a service or resource to be inaccessible to legitimate users.
Because of the similarities and fear of these types of attacks, Niantic acted indiscriminately, putting anyone out of the game account that could pose a threat to their servers. As a result of all these events a large number of accounts have been suspended that were associated with these map services and that in a normal situation would not have amounted to more than a soft ban instead of an absolute account ban.
So now, with the crisis of alleged DDoS attacks resolved, from Niantic they are going to study which accounts broke the terms and conditions of the service with total ignorance when using the map services of third-party applications and intend to reactivate them all in the coming weeks. Although the CEO of the company recalls that using this type of application continues to break the rules of the game so the accounts of those users who use them repeatedly will continue to be closed and not only soft bans will be applied, but also, in the event that they are break the rules several times, the ban can be permanent and this time, irreversible.
They also ensure that all accounts that were created to extract game data or those that use GPS spoofing techniques to play on Areas of the world that we are not in will be removed immediately. Niantic makes it very clear that the game is built to be fun so Cheaters are not welcome and will be punishedthus.
