This is how the new Hyperlapse effect works on Instagram
A few days ago we told you that Instagram had published a new application to record videos and share them on social networks This function is already available within of Instagram, but what they offer us now with Hyperlapse, the name of the new app, it's quite different. Hyperlapse is an application that allows us to record videos in time-lapse, or ratherwith time-lapse effectBut what is that time-lapse? Surely you've seen one of those videos in which a flowering plant is captured, or the clouds going by very fast. It is a resource that is often used in cinematography to show the passage of time and also to capture processes in which the movement is very slow, almost imperceptible to the human eye. To be able to record a video with natural movements it is necessary to record at least 24 frames per second, but in the case of time-lapse videos, much fewer frames are captured, so that when you play them, you can see the movement. In the case of Hyperlapse the results are very good, achieving very stable videos with smooth transitions, but how do they do it? The Instagram team has explained the operation after Hyperlapse.

Normally time-lapse videos are shot on a tripodand with special cameras, that's why it's so surprising that Hyperlapse can achieve such a good result with a mobile or tablet camera. The most interesting feature of Hyperlapse is its Image Stabilizer, which is the key to everything the system. What they do is digitally stabilize the video, recording the tremors of our hand when recording with the gyroscope of the iPhone or iPad When measuring tremors it is able to eliminate them, and it does by cropping a frame within our video, so that the sensation is of a fully stabilized video with very smooth movements. Actually we are looking at a crop of the video we have recorded, since it is necessary to eliminate that space in order to create the sensation of stabilization.
This function is already present in Instagram videos, but with Hyperlapse has been taken to a new level. The Instagram engineering team explains that when making a video at speed 6x, what they do is only take the sixth frame and stabilize it, then play it back at 30 frames per second to create the fast-motion effect. Logically the more our hand shakes, the greater the clipping will be and the video will lose resolution, so it is important to try to keep the camera as stable as possible all the time. The system that ensures that you don't crop more than necessary is called adaptive zoom and is a new feature of Hyperlapse The application has a very simple interface, with just one button to start recording and very few options, so it's interesting to know how it works.Hyperlapse is available for iPhone and iPad for free.
