Do you have an Honor or Huawei mobile with EMUI? Not sure how to take advantage of the company's personalization layer? While it is true that EMUI is quite similar to Android, and ultimately to iOS, the layer has a philosophy that can hinder its use by neophytes or elderly people. Changing the launcher or blocking applications with a password are some of the actions that we can carry out among many others that we will see below.
Table of Contents
Install a theme to personalize your mobile
Switch from launcher to Nova Launcher
Lock applications with password
Activate the option Find my device
Hide images within the Gallery

Install a theme to personalize your mobile
Although it is true that EMUI 10 and EMUI 9 have largely restricted the possibility of changing the theme on Honor Huawei phones, the truth is for the moment it is possible, although we will have to proceed through third-party applications.
The application in question is called Themes for Huawei, and we can download it from the Google store. We can also use themes hosted on the Google store itself.
After having downloaded and installed the application, we will only have to select a theme from the catalog to download it to the mobile. We can also change the aesthetics of the system separately: from the icons of the applications to the typography of the system and its appearance.
To apply the theme that we just downloaded we will have to refer to the Themes section that we can find in the Settings application.
Change launcher for Nova Launcher
We are not going to deny it, the launcher or launcher that Huawei mobiles bring by default is something rough and heavy. Although there are many options in the Google store, the one we recommend from tuexpertomovil.com is Nova Launcher.
Besides being a free launcher (it has some payment options), it allows us to install icon packs, and even change the system font and expand the size of the applications, among other things.
Added to this is the ability to create custom gestures within the screen, hide applications permanently or even create shortcuts for certain routines, not to mention its optimization and fluidity when navigating between applications.
Lock apps with password
Although EMUI does not allow us to hide applications or shortcuts, we can block applications with an alphanumeric password. If our mobile has a face unlock or fingerprint sensor, we can even enable a lock through these methods.
The way to proceed is as simple as going to the Settings application, and more specifically to the Security and privacy section. Once inside, we will go to the Application Blocking option and configure the corresponding method to block the apps.
Now we will only have to select all those applications that we want to block password using.
Activate the Find my device option
It's better to prevent than to cure. The Spanish proverb already says it. A feature that Android has included as standard since its fifth iteration is Find My Device.
Thanks to this we can monitor the position of our mobile phone at all times. We can also lock the phone remotely, format it and even sound an alarm voice.
To activate this function we will have to go to the Security and privacy section and then to the option to Find my device. Now we just have to make sure that the main option remains active.
It is advisable to have constant monitoring is to activate GPS and mobile data whenever we leave home. To find the position of the telephone we will have to refer to this page. We can also download the homonymous application to have control of other devices from the mobile phone itself.
From both platforms we can know the position of the mobile in real time, the battery level, the name of the WiFi network to which it is connected and even the IMEI number of the device.
Hide images within Gallery
Hiding the Gallery as such in EMUI is not possible. This does not mean that we cannot hide files, images, videos and, in general, any file that is inside the storage of our Honor or Huawei mobile.
To make use of this curious function we will have to refer to the Security and privacy section that we can find in Settings. Within this we will find an option called Safe. Now we just have to click on it and create a numeric password that serves as protection to hide all the files we want.
Finally, we will select all those files that we want to hide from the Gallery and File Manager application. To view them again, however, we will have to refer again to the Safe function.
Activate system gestures
The main one of EMUI 9 and EMUI 10 is based on the implementation of a native navigation gesture system with which we can interact with applications and system options without resorting to the traditional touch buttons of Menu, Back and Recent Applications.
To proceed with its activation we will have to go to the settings application, and more specifically you have the System section. Then we will go to System Navigation and choose the Gestures option from the four available options.
After activation, the typical Android on-screen buttons will disappear permanently. To interact with the system we will have to use the following gestures:
- Swipe from right or left to the center: go backwards.
- Swipe from bottom to top from one of the sides (right or left): activate the Google Assistant application.
- Swipe from bottom to top: go to Home.
- Swipe from bottom to top and hold: go to Recent apps.
Capture the screen with three fingers
Tired or tired of turning to the Volume Up and Power buttons to take screenshots? EMUI has a powerful function that allows us to capture the screen by sliding three fingers down.
To activate the option in question, just go to the Settings application, and more specifically to the Smart Assistance section and then to Control movements.
Within this section we will go to Capture with three fingers and finally we will activate the only option present. If our Honor or Huawei phone is high-end , it is most likely that this function will be replaced by the pinch with the knuckles. Phones like the Huawei P20 Pro or the Mate 20 have this curious function.
Speed up animations to make mobile faster
Unfortunately there is no application or method that allows us to improve the performance of a phone. What we can do is speed up EMUI animations to improve their response when opening applications, interacting with menus, or switching between activities. To carry out this task, however, we will have to activate the developer options.
Enabling these options is as simple as clicking several times on Build number in the About phone section that we can find in the Settings application. Specifically, in the System section.
After activating the development options, the menu in question will appear in the System section. Once inside these options we will go to the following sections:
- Transition-animation scale
- Window animation scale
- Animator duration scale
To speed up the animations we will have to set the figure to 0.5x. If we select 0x or Animations disabled, the animations will be completely disabled.
Install the TrueCaller app to block spam calls
While it is true that EMUI already has a function that allows us to block incoming calls and contacts stored in the phonebook, applications such as True Caller even identify the person responsible for the call if it has been reported by other users as a 'nuisance number' or 'spam number'.
Once we are inside the application, all you have to do is activate the spam call filter so that the system automatically blocks any call that the application detects as spam or annoying.
The application in question also allows us to record calls and even block all those numbers that have been stored in the phone book.
Install IFTTT application to create smart routines
Don't be scared by the name. IFTTT is an application that does not have any functionality in itself. To give it value, we will have to download routines that the application is capable of applying each time a certain condition is met.
What routines can we find within IFTTT? Upload a photo on Instagram and have it automatically posted on Twitter and Facebook, activate the WiFi connection when we are getting home, play a Spotify playlist when we are on the way to work, turn on the smart lights in the house when we walk in the door, activating the robot cleaner when it rains… In short, endless possibilities, and all available to anyone for free. We can also create our custom routines based on our behavior.
