Limit background apps
Having many applications installed on the mobile can become a problem for the battery if we neglect the way they work. While we may only use a couple of them in our daily routine, most may be consuming more mobile resources than you think, if you allow them to run in the background.
How to solve this? Just follow these steps:
- Go to Settings and look for "Battery and performance"
- Choose "Battery saving in applications" and you will see a list of all installed apps
- Select those that you can do without and choose the mode "Restrict background applications"
Although the app will continue to work, some functions such as notifications will be affected.
Disable connections when you're not using them
Cellular data, Bluetooth or GPS can wreak havoc on battery performance, so better have us turned off when not in use.
If you need to use mobile data all the time, there is a little trick that you can apply to take advantage of the moments when you have the screen turned off to avoid its use.
- Settings >> Battery and performance
- Choose the gear wheel to enter Battery Settings
- And in "Lock screen settings" select the first option, as you see in the image.
In this way, mobile data will be disabled when the screen is locked for more than 5, 10, 30 minutes, depending on the settings you set on your device.
Use MIUI functions to optimize battery
If you are in a hurry, and your mobile is running out of battery, you can apply a quick measure to gain extra time.
Just go to the "Battery and Performance" section and use the "Optimize" option for MIUI to recommend a series of changes to improve the battery. As you can see in the image, it may advise you to close apps, adjust the screen brightness, deactivate the touch response, among other options.
And the same dynamics can be applied if you need to optimize battery performance, but don't know where to start. Just let MIUI do the work for you, and suggest the changes you need to make on your mobile.
Activate energy saving in specific applications
Turning on system-wide power save can give your battery tons of extra hours. But if you don't want to be so extreme, you can apply power saving only to certain applications and to different degrees.
To do this, go to Battery and Performance >> Battery saver in apps. As we saw before, this section will show you the entire list of installed applications. So manually you will have to apply the Energy Saving mode you want, as you see in the image:
You can simply limit some of its functions or apply more extreme measures to restrict all its activity.
Track energy usage for problems
If your mobile is using more battery than normal and you want to apply changes to reverse this, first you have to see where the problem is.
MIUI helps you in this process from the "Battery and Performance" section. Under Battery you will see the option "Battery usage statistics", as you see in the image. If you select it you will find details of the energy consumption.
You will see the total energy consumption expressed in percentage and mAH, as well as a breakdown by time periods. You can scroll both the graph and the bars to focus on a specific period. Each time you perform this action, you will see at the bottom the processes and apps that were running during that time.
That way, you will be able to detect an anomaly in the use of the applications or a process that is consuming more battery than normal.
Use additional tools to detect changes in the battery
Although MIUI has powerful functions to monitor the battery status, you can turn to apps that offer you a more complete and detailed picture.
AccuBatery meets those requirements, and adds some extras. For example, it allows setting alarms to control the charge of the mobile, analyzes the wear of the battery, measures its real capacity, among many other functions.
If you think your battery is running down faster than normal, you can track its consumption with this app and detect if there are any anomalies. And if this seems too complicated or with too many options, you can opt for apps like Kaspersky Battery Life.
Schedule energy savings when you don't use your mobile
Another way to improve the battery of your Xiaomi mobile is by using energy saving in those moments that you do not use the mobile. For example, when you sleep, study or are in training.
To do this, follow these steps:
- Go to "Battery and Performance" and select the gear wheel
- Choose "Battery saving" and scroll to "Set time to change mode"
- Activate the option and choose the period of time you want
As long as you have that option activated, MIUI will automatically switch to Power Saving mode during that period of time.
Activate alerts for high battery consumption
A virus, an app malfunction, an update with errors… and the consumption of the mobile battery skyrockets. To detect these problems in time, you can configure MIUI to notify you.
To configure this detail, we repeat the same steps as the previous item to get to the Energy Saving section, but we choose "Battery consumption notifications", as you can see in the image.
This way, you will have one less problem with regard to battery performance.
Reduce screen-on time
If you have taken a look at the power consumption graphs, as we saw before, you will have noticed that the active screen is one of the most battery-intensive.
So any break we give the mobile is a plus for battery performance. But we can also take care of small details, for example, reduce the time the screen remains on when we are not using it.
If you haven't set a time limit, the screen will stay on until you turn it off manually. And that does not usually happen often when we are in multitasking mode. So let's delegate this action to MIUI to do it automatically.
To do this, go to Settings >> Lock screen and choose the Suspend option, as you see in the image. It will give you a series of options to turn off the screen when it detects a certain time of inactivity.
Clear the app cache in this way
A trick that we will find in the "Battery and Performance" section is the one that allows cleaning the cache of the apps when the screen is off.
We will find this option under "Lock screen settings" by selecting the gear wheel in Battery. As with the rest of the options we saw, MIUI gives you a series of options to "Clear the cache when the device is locked", although it is advisable to choose 30 minutes.
And of course, take care of other details such as screen brightness, reducing notifications, among many other actions that contribute to battery performance.
